GDP VS GNP for UPSC
Step 1: Simple Meaning
GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
GDP = Total value of goods and services produced inside a country’s borders in one year.
Focus = Location
It does not matter who produces it.
If production happens inside India → it counts in India’s GDP.
GNP (Gross National Product)
GNP = Total value of goods and services produced by a country’s citizens anywhere in the world in one year.
Focus = Nationality
It does not matter where production happens.
If Indians produce it → it counts in India’s GNP.
Step 2: Easy Example
Imagine:
1️⃣ A Japanese company makes cars in India.
This counts in India’s GDP.
But it does NOT count in India’s GNP (because it is foreign-owned).
2️⃣ An Indian company earns profit from a factory in Dubai.
This does NOT count in India’s GDP.
But it counts in India’s GNP (because Indians earned it).
Step 3: Formula (Very Simple)
GNP = GDP
Income earned by residents from abroad
– Income earned by foreigners in the country
This extra part is called Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA).
Step 4: One-Line Difference
GDP = Production inside the country.
GNP = Production by the country’s people.
Step 5: Why GDP is Used More
Most countries, including India, focus on GDP because:
• It measures domestic economic activity.
• It shows employment generation inside the country.
• It reflects economic strength within borders.
Super Simple Memory Trick
D in GDP = Domestic (Inside)
N in GNP = National (People)
If the question talks about location → think GDP.
If it talks about citizens earning abroad → think GNP.
