BIS FOR UPSC

 Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India.

It was established under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986, and is currently governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

It functions under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

BIS formulates Indian Standards (IS) for:

Industrial products

Consumer goods

Electronics

Construction materials

Automotive components

Safety equipment

2️⃣ Certification (Standard Mark)

Products that meet prescribed standards carry the BIS Standard Mark.

For certain notified products (e.g., cement, LPG cylinders, tyres), BIS certification is mandatory.

3️⃣ Hallmarking

BIS operates the Gold and Silver Hallmarking Scheme, certifying purity of precious metals.

4️⃣ Quality Control Orders (QCOs)

Government issues QCOs making BIS certification compulsory for specific products to:

Protect consumers

Prevent substandard imports

Improve product safety

🔹 How is BIS Relevant for UPSC Examination?

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) → Food safety regulation

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) → International standards body

🔹 Important Facts for Quick Recall

BIS replaced Indian Standards Institution (ISI).

ISI Mark is now issued under BIS.

BIS Act 2016 expanded scope to services and simplified enforcement.
