AGMARK for UPSC

 AGMARK – Relevance and Significance

AGMARK is a quality certification mark for agricultural products in India.

It is implemented by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

It is governed by the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1937.

🔹 What does AGMARK signify?

AGMARK signifies that the agricultural product:

1️⃣ Conforms to prescribed quality standards

2️⃣ Meets specified grade specifications

3️⃣ Has been tested in an approved laboratory

4️⃣ Is free from unacceptable adulteration

It ensures standardisation and grading of agricultural commodities.

🔹 Products Covered

AGMARK applies to products such as:

Cereals

Pulses

Spices

Edible oils

Honey

Fruits & vegetables

It is product-quality specific, not brand specific.

🔹 Why is AGMARK Relevant?

1️⃣ Consumer Protection

Ensures purity and quality of agricultural produce.

2️⃣ Market Transparency

Creates uniform grading standards across India.

3️⃣ Trade Facilitation

Helps in export credibility and domestic trade confidence.

4️⃣ Prevention of Adulteration

Reduces quality manipulation in agricultural markets.

🔹 Important Distinction (UPSC Angle)

AGMARK → Agricultural quality certification (India-specific)

BIS Standard Mark → Industrial product standards

Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) → UN body, does not issue AGMARK

Memory Trick

AGMARK = AGRI + MARK

Think: “Mark of quality for agricultural goods in India.”
