Origin & Evolution


The EU evolved from post-World War II integration efforts. 

It was formally founded under the Maastricht Treaty, signed in 1992 and enforced from 1 November 1993.

Currently, the EU has 27 member states

The original six founders were Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands 


Currency & Policies


The Euro is used by 20 of the 27 member states, forming the Eurozone. 

Some countries (e.g. Denmark, Poland, Hungary, etc) still use national currencies for economic flexibility.

Core Institutions & Governance


The three main institutions:


European Commission (executive; proposes legislation)


European Parliament (elected body; co-legislates)


Council of the European Union (national ministers; also co-legislates)

The EU is a major global player in trade and regulation.
